Mbl.is reported that the solar eclipse has begun in Iceland, with the Moon’s umbra first touching land at Straumnes lighthouse in the Hornstrandir region at 17:43:28.
The eclipse began as a partial eclipse and is expected to become total about an hour later.
The duration of totality varies across Iceland, lasting longest at Látrabjarg, where it will continue for two minutes and 13 seconds.
Large numbers of tourists have gathered in the Westfjords and on the Snæfellsnes peninsula, where viewing conditions are considered most favourable. Tourists were pictured settling in at Breiðavík, while people in Rif climbed onto rooftops to get a better view.
