One person killed in serious crash in Hankasalmi

A person died Saturday afternoon in a head-on collision between two cars on Highway 23 in Hankasalmi, central Finland, police said.

According to police, the driver of one vehicle veered into oncoming traffic for reasons yet unknown and collided with another car near the village of Kankainen. One person was killed and two were seriously injured. Emergency services were alerted just after 16:00 local time.

The highway was closed to all traffic while rescue and recovery crews worked at the scene. Fintraffic reported normal traffic flow had resumed by 20:00.

Police have opened a criminal investigation and identified the driver of the errant vehicle as the suspect.
