Hailuoto braces for traffic chaos as Bättre Folk festival opens
The sold-out Bättre Folk festival on Hailuoto island this weekend faces unprecedented traffic challenges after the recent opening of a fixed link to the mainland, replacing the previous ferry-only access, Yle reports.
Organizers expect significantly higher visitor numbers than in previous years, with estimates suggesting a 30–70% increase in traffic, depending on weather conditions. Festival director Pekka Heinonen noted that the sudden opening of the bridge in late June forced last-minute revisions to traffic plans.
Previously, ferry capacity naturally limited arrivals, allowing prioritization of artists and staff. Now, all vehicles share the same route, creating potential bottlenecks. Heinonen cited concerns over long queues delaying performers who need to reach the site within tight schedules.
Local police will be on-site to monitor traffic and public order. The festival has secured special permission to implement temporary traffic controls on the main road in Marjaniemi, where the event takes place. Vehicles will be stopped and directed based on purpose, with one lane reserved for emergency access at all times.
Day visitors will be directed toward Rantasumpu, while overnight guests will use roadside parking. A remote parking area has been moved to the island side of the causeway, with shuttle buses transporting attendees to the festival site. Organizers strongly advise against recreational driving to Marjaniemi during the event.
If congestion worsens, traffic may be halted near Hailuoto village. Despite the challenges, Heinonen remains confident, citing experienced staff and past success in managing the event.
