Boaters and swimmers in Finland’s eastern Gulf of Finland are struggling to find clear information on recent maritime and air traffic restrictions imposed after Ukrainian drone strikes on Russia, Yle reports.
Restrictions have disrupted ferry services and left holidaymakers stranded. On Monday, a passenger ferry in Kotka was unable to depart for the archipelago due to a temporary ban, with passengers only informed upon arrival at the port.
Authorities—including the Finnish Defence Forces, police, Border Guard, and transport agency Traficom—have clarified key questions:
1. Where to find restriction updates? Real-time information is available via Fintraffic’s website and app. Notices are also published by the issuing authority, sent to media, and broadcast on marine VHF channel 16.
2. Who can impose restrictions and why? The Interior Ministry, Defence Ministry, Border Guard, or Traficom may limit movement to ensure public safety or operational conditions for authorities, such as during rescue operations or drone defence, where live fire may be used.
3. Are restrictions absolute? Yes. Compliance is mandatory.
4. Can you swim or kayak in a restricted area? Swimming is permitted. Kayaking may be restricted unless the ban applies only to vessels over 24 metres under the Maritime Traffic Service Act.
5. What if you’re already inside a restricted zone? Leave immediately by the fastest safe route. Restrictions may remain in place for extended periods.
6. Can emergency services respond to a fire on an island in a restricted area? Yes. Authorities ensure their operations continue under all circumstances.
7. Can you be penalised for entering a restricted area? Yes. Penalties range from warnings to fines, depending on the violation.
