Residents of Tilst near Aarhus gathered Wednesday evening to lay flowers and observe a minute of silence in memory of a 64-year-old woman killed when a car crashed into her home during a police pursuit, Danish broadcaster DR reports.

Between 100 and 150 people attended the vigil, standing in silence to honour the woman and her family.

A local shopkeeper, Alexander Jensen, said the woman’s son works for him and that he wanted to pay his respects. “They were such good people,” he told DR. “It’s the wrong family to be hit by this kind of tragedy.”

Anja Glindtvad, a volunteer with a local sports club, organised the gathering after seeing neighbours express a desire to support the family in a Facebook group. She lives near the house and heard the crash just after midnight.

The case has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Authority (DUP) because a fatality occurred during the pursuit. Four young men, aged 19 and 20, were in the car. East Jutland Police are working to identify the driver and determine whether the men will face custody hearings. The four men and other residents in the house sustained minor injuries.

Authorities have not yet disclosed why police were pursuing the car.
