Københavns Lærerforenings Kolonier is raising funds to offer 700 free or subsidized summer camp places this year, after turning away many children in 2025 due to reduced municipal support, reports DR.
The association has seen a one-third drop in funding from Copenhagen Municipality over the past decade, forcing it to reject numerous applicants last year. This year, it aims to secure DKK 1.2 million from 15 charitable foundations to cover the shortfall.
“Last year we had to say no to many children, and we don’t want to be in that position again,” said Thomas Kirkeskov, the association’s leader. So far, two-thirds of the target amount has been raised.
Summer camps provide children with new experiences and social skills, according to youth researcher Søren Østergaard of the Center for Ungdomsstudier. “It’s a training ground for relationships, experiences, and perspectives—it broadens their horizons,” he said.
Maj-britt Raben Rasmussen, a single parent whose son has received a free place, said the support is vital. “Even if we go on holiday, I can’t cover six weeks of activities and expenses.”
The association operates 29 camp properties nationwide and will send 3,233 children from Copenhagen schools on 78 trips this summer—12 more than last year. A week at camp costs DKK 1,795, with 550 children already secured free places.
