Waiting times for driving tests in Denmark have reached unprecedented levels across various regions, causing significant delays comparable to heavy traffic jams. Bent Grue from the Danish Driving Instructors Union, with three decades of experience, highlights that never before have the wait times been this prolonged. Currently, some locations report waiting periods of up to eight weeks, with Copenhagen and Northern Zealand particularly affected, while other regions face delays of nearly a month.

Brian Paust Nielsen, Deputy Director for Driving Licenses at the Danish Road Traffic Authority, acknowledges the issue, stating the demand for driving tests is high but disputes claims from Grue that conditions have worsened. He emphasizes that driving instructors also bear responsibility for ensuring their students are prepared for their tests.

Transport Minister Thomas Danielsen recently announced a new initiative aimed at addressing the “unsustainable situation,” including changes to standardize test scheduling and increase available slots. However, Grue noted that since the implementation of these initiatives, waiting times have escalated. He calls the current circumstances unacceptable for both students and instructors, leading to additional costs for students who require extra driving lessons due to long waits.

Additionally, Danielsen admitted that a significant portion of the delays stem from high failure rates among students, with nearly half of test-takers in Copenhagen failing. New measures, including a mandatory waiting period for retests, have been proposed to combat this trend. The minister is collaborating with driving instructor associations to explore ways to improve training quality and manage the backlog.
