Tampere Pride march expects over 10,000 participants amid heightened security
Tampere’s Manse Pride event, one of Finland’s largest human rights gatherings, culminates today with a march and park festival expected to draw over 10,000 participants, according to organizers and police estimates.
The march begins at 14:00 from Keskustori, proceeding through Hämeenkatu, Rautatienkatu, and Tammela before ending at Sorsapuisto, where a park festival with performances by Tuure Boelius and Erika Vikman runs from 15:00 to 18:00. The procession will significantly disrupt public transport between 14:00 and 15:00.
Security has been increased this year due to rising polarization in Finland, said Miia Koskela, executive director of event organizer Sinuiksi ry. The event, themed around joy and hope, will be monitored by multiple police units from Internal Finland and dozens of volunteer stewards.
Commissioner Ari Aro of the Internal Finland Police stated that preparations are comparable to previous years, emphasizing the event’s peaceful nature. However, the measures follow recent incidents, including the assault of a host at a Pride event in Hämeenkyrö last week and disruptive shouting at a disability Pride march in Tampere last year.
Koskela noted the growing influence of international anti-gender movements in Finland but reaffirmed the event’s commitment to its message.
