Long-distance passenger cruises will resume on Lake Saimaa in summer 2027, a year later than planned, Yle reports.
The route, operated by Arctic Cruises, will run between Lappeenranta and Kuopio via Puumala, Savonlinna, Rantasalmi, and Varkaus aboard the M/S Carelia. The three-day journey includes overnight stays in local hotels, as the vessel lacks cabins.
International tour operators have expressed interest in the cruises, citing growing demand for river and lake voyages in Europe. Arctic Cruises CEO Saku Hyttinen noted that Saimaa’s cooler climate and scenic landscapes appeal to Central European travelers.
The launch was delayed due to financial difficulties at Järvisydäme, a Rantasalmi-based partner originally involved in the project. The first test cruise for tour operators is scheduled for late August this year, with weekly services expected to begin by summer 2028, running from mid-June to the end of August.
Lappeenranta Mayor Tuomo Sallinen emphasized the need to attract more international visitors, stating that direct flights from Central Europe to Lappeenranta and Savonlinna would boost the project. The M/S Carelia, owned by Lappeenranta, previously operated between Lappeenranta and Vyborg but has been idle since 2023 due to the closure of the eastern border.
The 1969-built vessel, last refurbished in 2004, has capacity for 200 passengers, two restaurants, a sun deck, and a duty-free shop. Other long cruises on Saimaa include the 12-hour Savonlinna–Kuopio route by the steamship S/S Heinävesi.
