Rainfall nears August normal after one week in Norway

Rainfall in several parts of Norway is already approaching the normal total for the whole of August, Dagbladet reports, after just seven days of the month.

Western Norway has received the most rain, and further precipitation could make August unusually wet along large parts of the Norwegian coast, according to meteorologists at Yr.no. Meteorologist Julie Solsvik Vågane described the coming week as “wet and grey”.

The area of western Norway north of Stad could receive between 50 and 70 millimetres of rain in 12 hours on Sunday. Vågane said a yellow warning for torrential rain could be issued because of the expected amounts.

Bergen has recorded 93.2 millimetres of rain so far this month, compared with a normal August total of 208 millimetres. In the village of Eimhjellen in Gloppen municipality, 180 millimetres has been recorded, about 5 per cent below the normal total for the entire month.

“It has been somewhat striking,” Vågane said of the rainfall in western Norway this summer.

The weather is expected to remain grey through most of next week. Wednesday may provide a short break from the rain, while temperatures are expected to remain between 12 and 15 degrees Celsius. A Nordic summer day is defined in the article as having a maximum temperature of at least 20 degrees.

“It will generally be a week characterised by rain and showers,” Vågane said.

Northern Norway is also facing a cool and wet weekend, with temperatures between 10 and 15 degrees and periods of rain. Sunday is expected to be the wettest day there. Temperatures may fall at the beginning of next week, bringing the possibility of snow on the highest peaks and mountain passes.

Southern and eastern Norway are expected to have the best chances of warm weather. Southern Norway could see some showers on Saturday and Sunday, followed by a longer period of dry weather and temperatures around 20 degrees.
