Sweden’s Public Health Agency has been assigned to ensure stable access to critical antibiotics, the government announced Tuesday in a press statement.

The directive is part of Sweden’s long-term strategy against antimicrobial resistance, first unveiled last autumn. Under the updated mandate, the agency will work to secure supplies of both newer and older antibiotics.

Social Minister Jakob Forssmed (Christian Democrats) emphasized the move’s urgency, stating that reliable access to effective antibiotics is “decisive for healthcare, combating resistance, and national preparedness.” While Sweden currently reports low levels of antibiotic resistance, Forssmed warned against complacency, stressing the need for continued domestic and international cooperation.

Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria mutate to survive treatment, often due to overuse or improper dosing. The World Health Organization ranks resistance among the top global health threats, projecting that by 2050, 70,000 Swedes annually could face infections from resistant bacteria if current trends persist.
