Finland launches study to prepare for potential Gulf Stream collapse
Finland has begun research into the possible impacts of a weakening Gulf Stream, the government announced Thursday, as climate change threatens to disrupt the Atlantic current system that helps regulate the country’s climate.
The state-funded project aims to strengthen scientific understanding of tipping points linked to climate change, which could rapidly alter living conditions. Researchers will assess how a slowdown in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation—of which the Gulf Stream is a critical part—might affect Finland’s temperatures and precipitation patterns.
In a worst-case scenario, average winter temperatures could drop by several degrees if the current weakens significantly.
