The Faroese government is drafting a formal policy proposal to strengthen the islands’ preparedness for external supply disruptions, with a focus on food, energy, telecommunications, and pharmaceuticals, public broadcaster KVF reports.
Bárður á Steig Nielsen, the minister responsible, confirmed the initiative in response to a parliamentary question from MP Sámal Petur í Grund, stating that while “much has already been done,” further measures are needed. Unlike neighboring countries, the Faroe Islands lacks comprehensive supply agreements with other nations, he noted.
The islands participate in the Nordic HAGA cooperation framework for emergency preparedness and are working to establish a Nordic Security of Supply Network to bolster resilience across the region. Authorities are also mapping existing stockpiles, supply chains, and vulnerabilities in key sectors.
State energy company SEV and oil firms are expanding fuel reserves, while a 2023 national cybersecurity strategy and upcoming legislation aim to address digital threats. The minister emphasized that domestic production capacity remains a priority.
