Finnish industrial machinery manufacturer Metso is investing €60 million in a new crushing equipment factory in Tampere’s Lahdesjärvi district, part of a broader €200 million relocation from its historic Hatanpää site, the company announced Tuesday.

Construction of the 66,000-square-meter Lokomotion technology center will begin this summer, with operations set to launch in late 2028. The facility will house design, testing, and production of rock and sand processing technologies, including the Lokotrack crushing and screening units slated to begin output in late 2027.

Markku Simula, head of Metso’s crushing business, called the project “the largest industrial investment in Tampere this millennium.” The first phase, a €150 million assembly and logistics hub, broke ground in June 2024 but was marred by a fatal workplace accident.

Metso will phase out its Hatanpää operations by 2030, freeing the century-old industrial site for residential development. The full Lahdesjärvi complex is expected to be completed by 2030.
