Swedish retailer ordered to pull Ica Basic liquid honey over adulteration concerns

Swedish supermarket chain Ica has been banned from selling its Ica Basic liquid honey after tests revealed the product contains lower-than-expected bee proteins and foreign enzymes, according to a report by news agency Siren cited by public broadcaster SVT.

The Miljö- och hälsoskyddsnämnden (Environmental and Health Protection Committee) in Solna Municipality ruled the honey adulterated, as it fails to meet legal standards requiring pure honey to be free from added substances and foreign organic or inorganic materials. The product’s label lists honey as its sole ingredient.

All stock bearing a best-before date of November 4, 2027, must be immediately removed from shelves and warehouses. The decision applies to the entire Swedish market.
