The director of the Faroese coast guard station Vørn has resigned following an investigation into a high-speed boat collision during a regatta in Vestmanna, public broadcaster KVF reported Monday.

Óli Hans Olsen stepped down after the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Fisheries requested a report on the May 16 incident, in which a speedboat struck the patrol and rescue vessel Brimil. The ministry confirmed the resignation but declined further comment.

Herálvur Joensen, director-general of the ministry, stated that Olsen’s report was submitted late, prompting his departure. Jóhan Simonsen, a department head at Vørn, will serve as acting director until a permanent replacement is appointed after the summer. Olsen will assist with unresolved matters over the coming month.

Police have charged one individual with violating maritime traffic regulations and endangering maritime safety in connection with the collision, which resulted in injuries requiring hospital treatment. Hans Johannes á Brúgv, director of the Faroese Maritime Authority, confirmed to KVF on May 20 that authorities continue to investigate potential breaches of maritime rules.
