A new SVT/Verian poll shows 19% of voters planning to back Sweden’s red-green opposition bloc would be less likely to do so if the Left Party (V) joined a future government—nearly double the reluctance seen among centre-right voters over the Sweden Democrats (SD).
The survey, published Saturday, reveals that while 9% of voters for the governing Tidö coalition would hesitate to support it with SD in cabinet, the Left Party’s potential inclusion has a far stronger deterrent effect on opposition voters.
Mats Knutson, SVT’s political commentator, called the disparity “surprising,” noting that Social Democrat leader Magdalena Andersson has repeatedly distanced herself from the idea of governing with V. “She absolutely does not want to be associated with the Left Party in government,” Knutson said.
He added that while Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson’s (Moderates) decision to bring SD into government was politically risky, the poll suggests the Left Party’s presence could pose an even greater challenge for the opposition.
