Seismic Activity at Reykjaness Peninsula
The earthquake activity around the Sundhnúks volcanic group remains consistent, with 20 to 40 tremors recorded in recent days, mostly of minor magnitude. A brief series of earthquakes was also reported last night in the Eyjafjörður Deep, emphasizing ongoing geological activity in the region.
In the last 24 hours, around 40 earthquakes were detected in the Sundhnúks volcanic area, predominantly in the southern section. According to a natural disaster expert, most of these tremors were small, with the largest measuring 1.5 in magnitude.
Recent GPS data and satellite images confirm a steady pace of land uplift and magma accumulation over the past weeks. If this rate continues, scientists anticipate a possible volcanic eruption within the next two weeks.
Approximately 20 earthquakes occurred last night in the Eyjafjörður Deep, about 15 kilometers northeast of Siglufjörður. Experts attribute these quakes to movements along the tectonic plate boundaries, which are relatively common in this region.
Overall, while the magnitude of tremors remains low, the ongoing geological changes indicate potential volcanic activity in the near future, keeping authorities and residents vigilant.
