Organisers of Denmark’s Lillebælt Half Marathon have acknowledged criticism over water shortages during Saturday’s race, admitting they failed to anticipate runners using supplies to cool themselves in the heat, DR reports.

Experienced runner Steen K. Jørgensen, who has completed 398 half marathons, described chaotic scenes at water stations, with waits of 10–12 minutes and no energy drinks available. “Liquids are crucial, and there should be enough. Normally, you can grab a cup and keep running—but not this time,” he said.

Race director Mads Stryhn confirmed the complaints were justified, explaining that while 20,000 cups were provided for 8,500 runners—enough for two per person—many used three or four cups to douse themselves. “We weren’t prepared for so many to use water that way,” he admitted, ruling out policing runners’ behaviour.

Stryhn pledged improvements, suggesting solutions like sprinkler systems for future races. Jørgensen, however, dismissed the excuse, stating other major events—like Berlin’s marathon—manage supplies effectively. “I hope they learn from this,” he said.

The incident follows similar criticism last month at Copenhagen’s Royal City Half Marathon, where runners faced long waits and shortages.
