The Helsingør Islamic Congregation has expressed disappointment after the city council voted to temporarily halt plans for a major expansion of its mosque and cultural centre, DR reports.

Councillors approved a one-year suspension of the project on Monday, citing concerns over parking and traffic in the area. The decision requires a new local development plan before construction can proceed.

“It is sad and frustrating,” said Mesut Harman, chairman of the congregation’s board. “We believe this is an extreme step, especially since the administration had already assessed that the project complies with the current local plan. We would prefer dialogue and solutions rather than a complete stop.”

The current 412-square-metre facility on Egevænget has become insufficient, with worshippers sometimes praying outdoors due to lack of space. The congregation had proposed adding a two-storey, 1,200-square-metre extension to accommodate growing demand.

Conservative councillor Janus Kyhl defended the delay, stating: “There is a risk they would start building immediately. The infrastructure simply cannot handle it. We are now drafting a new local plan and will involve all parties in that process.”

Harman emphasised the congregation’s efforts to address traffic concerns, including splitting Friday prayers into two sessions, installing parking guidance, and deploying attendants during peak times. “We take these concerns seriously and want to work with the city on solutions,” he said.

The temporary ban—approved by a coalition of Conservative, Liberal, Liberal Alliance, Denmark Democrats, and Danish People’s Party councillors—does not kill the project, Harman stressed. “We remain optimistic and will continue engaging with the municipality to find a way forward.”
