Polling stations open across Iceland as voting begins

Polling stations opened across Iceland at 9am on Saturday, mbl.is reported, with most due to remain open until 10pm.

At Breiðagerðisskóli, a school in Reykjavík, a district election official rang in the start of voting at 9am, reviving a former tradition.

Eva B. Helgadóttir, chair of the central election committee for Reykjavík North, said the opening had gone smoothly. She said all officials had arrived at Reykjavík City Hall by 6.30am, while district election committees collected election materials for polling stations between 7.30am and 8am.

There are 24 polling stations in Reykjavík’s two constituencies.

The first turnout figures are due to be published at 10am. Reykjavík City will publish the figures online, allowing turnout in Reykjavík North and Reykjavík South to be followed throughout the day.
