A pony named Bellami was found dead and partially eaten in Egtved, Denmark, with authorities attributing the attack to a wolf based on bite marks and other evidence, DR reports.

The owner, Anna Marie Dahl, discovered the remains last week while feeding her ponies with her husband. Only a third of the pony was left, she said, with ravens feeding on what remained.

“It came as a complete shock. We’ve never experienced anything like this—an animal of that size being taken by another,” Dahl told DR.

The Danish Nature Agency (Naturstyrelsen) inspected the carcass and concluded that a wolf was responsible. Rasmus Jensen, a wolf consultant for the agency, cited bite patterns, throat injuries, and paw prints at the scene as key evidence.

“Our professional assessment is that this was a wolf attack,” Jensen stated. “The spacing of the canine teeth, the diameter of the bite marks, the severe throat injuries, and the rapid consumption of the animal all point to a wolf.”

Dahl and her husband left the remains overnight, but by the next morning, they had disappeared—likely taken by the wolf, she believes.

Following the attack, Dahl moved her six remaining ponies to a fold closer to her home for safety. If another incident occurs, she says she may sell the ponies rather than risk further losses.

“Every morning, I wake up wondering if they’re all still there,” she said. “We can’t keep feeding the wolves.”
