Suomussalmi restricts unsupervised library access for under-15s after disruptive behaviour
The municipality of Suomussalmi in eastern Finland has removed unsupervised library access for children under 15 due to disruptive behaviour, public broadcaster Yle reports. The restriction, imposed by the local education committee, will remain in effect until the end of September.
Younger patrons may still visit the library during standard service hours but will require adult supervision during unmanned operating times. Starting in October, guardians must apply in person with their child to restore unsupervised access, with both parties committing to follow library guidelines.
The decision follows incidents of misconduct during the library’s self-service periods. Staff will review the rules with guardians and minors before reinstating access.
