Finland warns Ukraine over territorial violations after suspected drone discoveries
Finland has communicated to Ukraine that it takes violations of its territorial integrity seriously, Prime Minister Petteri Orpo told public broadcaster Yle on Tuesday, following the discovery of multiple drones believed to be of Ukrainian origin.
Orpo confirmed that a drone found in Lake Pyhäjärvi, Kitee, on Tuesday—likely containing explosives—may be linked to earlier discoveries in Kouvola and Luumäki. Authorities suspect the drones are part of the same incident.
“Finland has built drone defence capabilities for years, but no country can guarantee 100% prevention of drone incursions,” Orpo stated. He reiterated Finland’s stance that Ukraine has the right and duty to defend itself against Russia’s ongoing offensive.
The Border Guard and National Bureau of Investigation are leading the preliminary criminal investigation into the territorial violation. Further details on whether the Luumäki drone detonated mid-air before crashing remain under investigation, with clarifications expected in the coming weeks.
