Finnish authorities recover drone debris from crash site in Luumäki
Finnish police and border guards have recovered parts of a drone that crashed in Luumäki, southeastern Finland, according to a report by national broadcaster Yle. Fragments were found scattered across the ground and on ice, though underwater searches yielded no additional discoveries.
The investigation, led by a joint task force of the National Bureau of Investigation and the Finnish Border Guard, remains ongoing. Authorities have warned the public not to approach or touch any suspected drone debris, urging immediate reports to emergency services via 112.
Restrictions on movement in the affected areas—including Luumäki and Kouvola’s Savisto district—have been lifted after initial searches concluded. In Kouvola, the cordon was removed Monday afternoon, while Luumäki’s roadblocks were dismantled Monday evening.
Finnish officials are examining the drones’ flight paths and the sequence of events that led to their entry into Finnish airspace. The Border Guard’s probe into the territorial violation is expected to take weeks.
A separate drone was also discovered Tuesday in Pyhäjärvi, Parikkala, where the National Bureau of Investigation is assessing whether to launch its own preliminary probe.
Two drones entered Finnish territory on Sunday, coinciding with reports of significant GPS interference in the region.
