Drilling waste enters river in Saksunardalur

Wastewater from a drilling site in Saksunardalur has flowed into the Stórá river, according to a report by Faroese broadcaster KVF.
The site is used for geothermal drilling operations. Sunda municipality stated that the discharged water is not contaminated and that technical measures are in place to prevent a recurrence. The municipality added that it has been in contact with the operator and received assurances that procedures have been corrected.
Local angling association Sílaveiðufelagið has expressed concern over potential harm to aquatic life in the river. The municipality clarified it lacks the authority to halt operations, as the discharged water is not deemed hazardous.
The site operator declined to comment but confirmed in a brief statement that emergency measures have been implemented to prevent further incidents.
