A Ukrainian drone crashed within 100 metres of a private residence in Kouvola, southeastern Finland, on Sunday morning, forcing the homeowner to evacuate, reports Finnish public broadcaster Yle.

Antti Syrjänen, a resident of Kouvola’s Oravala district, was drinking his morning coffee when he heard a fighter jet circling overhead. After investigating a noise in the nearby forest—described as “like a large tree snapping”—he discovered the wreckage of a drone less than 100 metres from his home. The debris included a combustion engine, propeller, and a small box with a blinking green light.

Syrjänen immediately contacted emergency services. Upon arrival, police and rescue personnel cordoned off the area, preventing him from returning home. As of Monday afternoon, the site remained closed to the public, with authorities conducting investigations.

“I’d like to go home at some point,” Syrjänen told Yle. “I’m dreading what the yard looks like now.” He noted that had the drone travelled just 100 metres further, it would have struck his house. “I don’t know if it was meant for me,” he added. “At least I haven’t ended up in a hero’s grave yet.”

Finnish authorities confirmed that two Ukrainian drones crashed in southeastern Finland on Sunday—one in Kouvola and another in Luumäki. A second drone was detonated by Finnish officials overnight due to an attached warhead.
