Finnish authorities detonate drone carrying unexploded warhead in controlled explosion
Finnish police carried out a controlled detonation of a drone in southeastern Finland late Sunday after discovering it was carrying an unexploded combat warhead, public broadcaster Yle reports.
The explosion occurred at 11:26 PM local time near Kouvola, where one of two unmanned aerial vehicles that crashed in the region over the weekend had landed. Authorities confirmed the loud blasts heard in the area were from the deliberate detonation.
Investigations continue at a second crash site in Luumäki, where debris from the drone has scattered across the ground. Police and border guards have conducted on-site examinations since Sunday to determine whether the aircraft exploded upon impact.
Finnish officials have not yet confirmed the origin or intended target of the drones.
