Finnish police are investigating an exceptionally large charity fraud case in the Päijät-Häme region, with a 50-year-old woman from Hollola suspected of collecting up to €100,000 under false pretenses, reports public broadcaster Yle.

The suspect allegedly solicited donations in social media groups, claiming the funds would support low-income families with children and elderly individuals. She is accused of operating under a false name and diverting the collected money for personal use. Authorities note she has a prior history of fraud offenses.

Detective Chief Inspector Juha Pirkkalainen described the scale of the fraud as “exceptional,” comparing it to a widely publicized 2023 case known as the “Anteeksi Pekka” scam, which involved approximately €14,500. The current investigation covers alleged crimes committed between 2020 and 2025 under charges of fundraising violations and aggravated fraud.

Around 400 donors are believed to be victims, with individual contributions exceeding €15,000—the threshold for aggravated fraud under Finnish law. The suspect was detained on Sunday, and interrogations have begun. Police are also examining potential money laundering links, as funds passed through accounts belonging to third parties.
