The Liberal Party in Sweden is navigating a period of deep internal turmoil following a divisive policy shift on cooperation with the Sweden Democrats, with political analysts now watching whether the move will revive or further weaken the party, SVT Nyheter reports.

After weeks of chaotic internal debates—marked by high-profile resignations, technical failures during a party conference, and intense media scrutiny—Liberal leader Simona Mohamsson succeeded in pushing through a new stance allowing potential future governance deals with the far-right Sweden Democrats (SD). The fallout has left the party’s political trajectory uncertain, according to SVT’s political commentator Elisabeth Marmorstein.

“What matters now is how this affects the next opinion polls,” Marmorstein said, noting that Mohamsson’s gambit could either be vindicated or backfire depending on voter reaction. If support rises, she added, “Mohamsson will be hailed as a hero” for stabilizing the party. If not, the internal divisions may deepen.

The shift reverses the Liberals’ long-standing refusal to engage with SD, a position that had already triggered defections, including climate policy spokesperson Romina Pourmokhtari’s public dissent. Pourmokhtari reiterated in a recent interview that her opposition to SD collaboration remains unchanged, calling the party’s policies “hard to comprehend.”

Marmorstein highlighted four key questions shaping the Liberals’ immediate future:

  • Opinion poll trends: Will the strategy shift translate into a rebound in voter support, or will it alienate the party’s traditional base?
  • Internal cohesion: Can Mohamsson unite a fractured party after a conference marred by technical meltdowns and open criticism?
  • Electoral viability: With regional leaders resigning en masse, does the party still have the infrastructure for a competitive 2026 campaign?
  • SD’s response: Will the Sweden Democrats reciprocate the overture, or will they exploit the Liberals’ instability?

Mohamsson, who was re-elected as leader amid the chaos, has framed the move as a pragmatic necessity. In a post-conference interview, she acknowledged the “sadness” of the internal strife but struck an optimistic tone, joking that her five-year-old child had been the “hero of the evening” by lightening the mood during the nearly four-and-a-half-hour ordeal.

The party’s next steps will be closely watched, with analysts stressing that its survival may hinge on whether voters perceive the SD pivot as a bold reset or a desperate miscalculation.
