Finnish police have seized nearly 800 kilograms of explosives, including dynamite and detonating cord, after an investigation triggered by a stolen car, public broadcaster Yle reports.

The explosives were discovered in an unlicensed container in Kemiönsaari, southwest Finland, following a months-long probe. Authorities said the materials—originally stored for a now-defunct quarrying operation—had been left unattended without proper disposal.

The case began in July when a stolen car in Salo was found containing half a kilogram of explosives. Subsequent searches in Paimio uncovered additional explosive materials and dozens of stuffed animals. The breakthrough came in September when police located the container in a remote area of Kemiönsaari, holding 780 kilograms of dynamite, detonating cord, and pipe charges.

“From a public safety perspective, it was crucial that this container came to the attention of authorities and the illegal explosives were destroyed,” said lead investigator Tommi Kosunen in a statement.

Police described the quantity as “exceptional” for Finland, where annual seizures typically amount to a few dozen kilograms. No clear link or intended use for the explosives was established.

Four adults—three men and one woman—were detained during the investigation, with two held in pre-trial custody. While initially suspected in the broader case, they are no longer linked to the Kemiönsaari explosives. Charges include multiple explosives offenses, concealment of criminal proceeds, and vehicle theft.

The investigation is now complete and has been forwarded to prosecutors.
