The Finnish Ministry of Education has commissioned an investigation into the current state of home education in the country, according to a statement by Education Minister Anders Adlercreutz (Swedish People’s Party) to national news agency STT.

The review aims to assess how municipalities monitor home schooling and whether educational equality is being upheld. Adlercreutz highlighted concerns over the lack of certainty regarding the quality of instruction, as Finnish law allows children to be withdrawn from formal schooling through a simple notification by their guardian.

Latest figures from the Child Ombudsman’s Office show nearly 900 children were in home education in 2024—a threefold increase over the past decade.
