A new report from Aarhus Municipality reveals that 11 out of 87 swimming associations in the city are illegally enforcing gender-segregated pool access, despite a national ban on such restrictions since January.
The investigation found that these clubs prevent individuals of the opposite sex from entering pool areas during gender-specific sessions—either barring men when women’s groups are swimming or vice versa. Under current Danish law, such exclusions are prohibited.
Councilor for Culture Jesper Kjeldsen (Social Democrats) announced plans to tighten oversight of the clubs. “Several associations have explicitly stated they can guarantee no one of the opposite sex is present during these sessions. That is not allowed,” Kjeldsen said, confirming that municipal authorities have initiated inspections and entered dialogue with the non-compliant clubs.
Jacob Søgaard Clausen of the Denmark Democrats party demanded immediate action, calling for the clubs to be barred from municipal pools. “This is not the time for dialogue—these associations are openly breaking the rules. Their access should be revoked without delay,” he stated.
Kjeldsen countered that excluding the clubs outright would violate the principle of proportionality under Denmark’s adult education law, which requires attempting dialogue before imposing sanctions.
