Greenland rejects US senator’s remarks on sovereignty
Greenland’s foreign affairs minister has dismissed comments by US Senator Marco Rubio questioning the territory’s relationship with Denmark, stating that its future remains solely in the hands of its people.
In a Facebook post, Múte B. Egede (Inuit Ataqatigiit) responded to Rubio’s remarks during a congressional hearing, where the senator described Greenland as “a part of Denmark—for now,” according to Reuters. Egede affirmed that such statements change nothing.
“Greenland’s future is decided by us in Greenland. That is how it has been, how it is now, and how it will remain,” Egede wrote. He stressed that ongoing talks between Greenland, Denmark, and the US—including on security and defence—continue “constructively and with respect for all parties, as is proper among allies.”
Egede did not elaborate on the substance of the negotiations but urged maintaining the current course of dialogue.
