The Nordic Council has established a committee to review the Helsinki Treaty, aiming to grant the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Åland equal standing within the organisation, Faroese broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya reports.

The Nordic Council of Ministers announced on Monday that the committee will assess potential amendments to the treaty, which could enable the three territories to participate on equal terms with the other Nordic countries. The group is tasked with proposing specific legal changes and other measures to achieve this goal.

The eight-member committee will represent all Nordic governments, including the Faroe Islands. Denmark, which currently holds the presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers, will chair the committee. Legal scholar Elina Pirjatanniemi, a professor at Åbo Akademi University, will assist the committee in its work. Pirjatanniemi previously led preliminary research on the legal implications of revising the Helsinki Treaty.
