Oulu communications director apologizes to Lauri Salovaara amid controversy over blunt remarks
The communications director of the city of Oulu, Mikko Salmi, has issued an apology to entrepreneur Lauri Salovaara for his blunt remarks. However, he maintains that his comments regarding the attitudes of local residents toward their city were justified. During a panel discussion, Salmi referred to research indicating low trust in the city administration among Oulu’s residents.
The city’s mayor, Ari Alatossava, called Salmi’s behavior inappropriate, and further discussions on the matter are planned. Members of the Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party) have publicly demanded Salmi’s resignation due to his actions and previous warnings he received. Salmi has stated he has no intention of resigning.
In the panel, which took place at the Northern Ostrobothnia Tourism Forum, Salmi made several critical statements, including a notably harsh metaphor about the mindset of Oulu residents. He asserted that the criticisms he voiced were meant to highlight the disconnect between Oulu’s citizens and their local governance, as shown by a survey by T-media on attitudes in Finland’s ten largest cities.
Salmi also commented on ongoing disputes involving Salovaara, which have heightened tensions. Salovaara expressed his discontent with Oulu’s government, especially after purchasing a building that turned out to be mold-infested.
Despite the backlash, Salmi hopes to shift the focus of discussions toward fostering a more positive and supportive culture in Oulu, highlighting that while many people are proud of their city, fewer trust the administration or are willing to support it in difficult times.
