Jonas Gahr Støre has addressed concerns regarding his leadership amid rising dissatisfaction within the Labour Party, especially after recent lukewarm poll ratings. During an appearance on Politisk kvarter, he maintained that his political career is not under threat, asserting that he is committed to leading the party through this challenging period.

Internal discussions suggest a potential leadership change, with some party members advocating for a shift before the upcoming national convention in April. Nonetheless, others caution against making such a significant transition amid an election campaign.

Støre expressed his motivation to tackle the challenges head-on, acknowledging the party’s current difficulties, but insisting that the policies they are promoting will deliver positive results. Deputy Leader Tonje Brenna supported Støre, dismissing any speculation about her challenging his leadership. She outlined her conviction that the party should rally behind Støre rather than consider a leadership change at this juncture.

Conversely, party secretary Kjersti Stenseng termed the situation serious, recognizing the negative polling data’s implications. Health Minister Jan Christian Vestre also backed Støre, emphasizing that, despite the difficult circumstances, he remains the right leader for the party.

Støre accepted the responsibility for recent poor performances, noting that he is aware of the criticism and is focused on reversing the party’s fortunes. He called for collective effort within the party to address the challenges ahead, affirming that any decisions regarding leadership should come from within the organization itself as they prepare for future elections.
