Townhouse sold for first time in Gellerupparken, Aarhus as young couple moves in
In a notable development, a townhouse has been sold for the first time in Gellerupparken, Aarhus. The buyers, a young couple aged 27 and 28, are moving in together from a rental apartment located in central Aarhus. Excited about their new home, one of the buyers expressed, “We believe it’s a great house, conveniently close to the city center, and as recent graduates, we can afford it.”
The pension company AP Pension has recently put 26 new townhouses on the market in this area, recognized as a problematic neighborhood by the government since 2010. Gellerupparken is expected to be included in this year’s updated list from the Ministry of Social Affairs and Housing, though the area has undergone significant changes in recent years. Many outdated residential blocks from the 1970s have been demolished, making way for hundreds of new rental units.
The couple acknowledged Gellerupparken’s reputation as a troubled area but noted a positive shift in the atmosphere, saying, “We have talked about this, but the mood has really changed. We don’t have any reservations.” They didn’t explore other neighborhoods before deciding on Gellerupparken, instead choosing to attend multiple open house events in the area to ensure it met their family needs.
Peter Olsson, director at AP Pension’s property management, highlighted Gellerupparken’s geographic advantages, noting its proximity to Brabrand Lake and the city center. Townhouses are priced cautiously, with the largest units at 126 square meters listed around three million kroner; comparably sized properties in nearby Egå are priced higher.
Aarhus’ social democratic mayor emphasized the importance of homeownership in Gellerup, which could attract families keen on fostering a positive community. Both first-time buyers expressed anticipation in leaving their city apartment for a more grounded, community-oriented life in their new home.
