An accident early in the morning caused significant disruption on Highway 4 in Heinola, reigniting discussions about the maintenance of Finnish roads. A truck veered off the road between Vahteristo and Lusi, leading to traffic being halted. Poor weather conditions are suspected to have contributed to the incident.

Mika Lahti, a truck driver from Orivesi, expressed concerns regarding how adverse weather affects professional drivers. “Bad weather is stressful, especially since we share the road with other vehicles,” he noted, highlighting the dangers posed by oncoming traffic, particularly in difficult conditions.

Lahti criticized the state of Highway 24, stating it has been lacking in maintenance, especially with the unusual weather patterns that have brought heavy snow, rain, and sudden drops in temperature. He emphasized that more proactive road upkeep is necessary, mentioning periods when snowplows were not in operation, resulting in built-up ice.

Kari Nieminen, another truck driver, mentioned that severe weather occurs a few times each year and called for adjustments in driving strategies to adapt to changing conditions.

Anssi Kujala, the director of the Finnish Transport and Logistics association, pointed out ongoing discussions with authorities regarding the condition of major routes like Highway 4. A 2023 survey revealed that a significant number of transport companies are dissatisfied with the current winter maintenance levels, particularly on non-primary roads, where 80% of respondents feel conditions are inadequate.

With numerous accidents reported recently, Kujala noted that sometimes road conditions are so poor that safety calls for stopping vehicles. He stressed the need for sufficient funding for road maintenance and timely response by snow-clearing equipment to ensure safe driving conditions.
