The market has recently seen the arrival of electric snowmobiles, but sales in Finland remain modest, with only a handful sold across individual retailers. However, there is optimism in the industry about the future demand for these eco-friendly vehicles. Ilkka Korteniemi, a snowmobile dealer from Rovaniemi, highlighted potential uses for electric snowmobiles in ski resorts, travel services, and among various outdoor enthusiasts. He noted that many consumers regularly maintain their snowmobiles, accumulating annual mileage of 300 to 400 kilometers, making electric models a favorable option for them.

While some share this positive outlook, others, like Tapio Kiiskinen, a store manager at Tarvikekeskus in Rovaniemi, report minimal demand for electric snowmobiles in their location. Kiiskinen mentioned that the primary market remains in tourism, although there might be limited interest in electric utility models for short-distance travel. He identified several challenges hindering sales, including limited availability, the current technology’s range limitations, traditional preferences, and higher prices.

José Boisjoli, CEO of BRP, a longstanding manufacturer in Rovaniemi, acknowledged electric mobility as a significant trend in the automotive sector, which is gradually influencing all types of vehicles. While BRP is exploring electric models, Boisjoli emphasized the company’s ongoing investment in the development of combustion engines. He cautioned that it may take decades for all their products to become fully electric, estimating a timeline of up to 40 years before electric engines could fully replace traditional combustion engines.
