An 86-year-old entrepreneur, Matti Sallinen, has received a prestigious invitation to the Independence Day festivities, also known as the “Linnan juhlat,” taking place in Finland. The invitation arrived last week and has left Sallinen both surprised and deeply touched. “I suppose this is a sign that I’ve done something right. It almost brought a tear to my eye,” he expressed emotionally.

Sallinen has been operating his mobile shop since 1972, a time when many people still lived in rural areas, despite the onset of urbanization. His current business primarily serves summer residents, those with mobility challenges, and people living alone. He operates in the villages around Outokumpu, Heinävesi, and Tuusniemi, sometimes making runs five days a week. “I treat all my customers equally, and for those in poor health, I bring their groceries right to their door,” he said.

As part of this year’s event, which seeks to honor individuals who foster community spirit and inclusivity, Sallinen believes his invitation aligns with these values. His commitment to his work can be seen in the extensive distances he covers; in the summer months, he drives about 800 kilometers monthly, with his longest route stretching 200 kilometers.

Although Sallinen has faced health issues, including a battle with prostate cancer, he continues to work diligently. He plans to keep operating at least until next spring, when his driver’s license will expire. Describing his struggle to find a buyer for his business over the last decade, he hopes this newfound recognition will spark interest among potential buyers. “I want to represent ordinary rural people at this event,” he concluded.
