In Reykjavík, the iconic Oslo tree has been sourced from the natural reserve of Heiðmörk. The tree, a nearly 50-year-old Sitka spruce, is set to be displayed at Austurvöllur, with its lights scheduled to be lit on December 1st, marking the beginning of the Advent season.

This marks the first time Einar Þorsteinsson, who became the city’s mayor in January, has personally chosen the Oslo tree. He traveled to Heiðmörk specifically for this occasion. The selection process involved careful consideration to ensure the tree not only meets size requirements but is also visually appealing, as emphasized by Auður Elva Kjartansdóttir, the manager of the Reykjavík Forest Association. She noted that the tree must fit on a transport vehicle and into the city’s Christmas tree base.

Over the past weeks, the staff have been on the lookout for the ideal tree, guided by the vision that “above all, it must be beautiful.” The city has a 20-year plan for tree cultivation, with numerous trees awaiting their turn to be illuminated at Austurvöllur in the coming years.

As the city gears up for this festive tradition, the anticipation surrounding this year’s tree continues to grow, promising a delightful addition to the holiday celebrations in Reykjavík.
