Norsvin, a Norwegian company, has made a significant impact in the global swine industry, contributing to the genetics of one in five pigs worldwide, amounting to approximately 160 million animals. Utilizing CT technology, a method unprecedented in the field, Norsvin evaluates traits related to heart and lung capacity in pigs. Each year, the company produces 11 million doses of semen and claims a prominent position among the largest swine genetics firms globally.

The company’s ambitions include doubling its current 16% share of the global market within the next decade. Norsvin places a strong emphasis on animal welfare, having developed pigs that require less feed per kilogram of meat produced. This efficiency not only conserves resources but also cuts costs, benefiting both production and the environment.

Agriculture Minister Geir Pollestad believes that Norsvin’s export activities will enhance future research and development, thus providing a competitive edge both domestically and internationally. The innovative testing center located near Løten is strictly controlled to minimize disease risks, underscoring the company’s commitment to biosecurity.

The pigs bred by Norsvin enjoy an excellent health status, making them particularly desirable in international markets. The firm has refined their breeding practices to create livestock that needs less feed, which is the largest expense in swine production. Minister Pollestad commends Norsvin’s approach, noting that their focus on overall animal welfare, rather than solely meat yield, positions them favorably in the industry. He highlights the importance of such companies for the future of Norwegian agriculture, ensuring that they can continue to develop higher quality animals for both local and global markets.
