Preparations for the upcoming parliamentary elections in Iceland, scheduled for November 30, are intensifying. Key political figures from the Northwest constituency have highlighted the need to prioritize the construction of a tunnel between Súðavík and Ísafjörður. This issue emerged during a public meeting organized by the Infrastructure Association of the Westfjords, where nine out of ten candidates supported this initiative, citing the current road’s dangers, particularly in adverse weather conditions.

The topic of senior citizens’ pensions was also in focus. Björn Snæbjörnsson, head of the Pensioners’ Federation, expressed the need for political candidates to advocate for better living conditions for this demographic, emphasizing that many receive pensions below the minimum wage.

In addition, the National Assembly will convene for a session today addressing several legislative matters, among which is a proposal for temporary changes to the election laws. Currently, almost 300 applications for voter registration are pending, filed by Icelandic citizens residing abroad. If approved, the proposed changes would allow for these applications to be backdated to the day they were submitted, ensuring that those who apply by November 19 will be eligible to vote.

Healthcare remains a pressing concern for voters, with significant discussions expected regarding funding and policy directions in this sector. The ongoing debate around critical issues such as pension adjustments, healthcare challenges, and infrastructural developments is poised to shape the electoral landscape in the coming weeks. Public discussions and candidate forums will continue to be key platforms for addressing these urgent matters.
