Helsinki prepares to acquire vacant arena amid stalled negotiations
The City of Helsinki is preparing to acquire the Helsinki Arena, which has been vacant since February 2022. The city initially aimed to find a new owner for the arena, but negotiations have not progressed as expected. Consequently, Helsinki is moving forward with a plan to purchase the facility, with a request for acquisition expected to be submitted in November or December. The final decision on the purchase will rest with the government.
Next week, the Helsinki City Council will discuss a proposal urging the city environment sector to advance the acquisition process and prepare necessary budget proposals. The request for interim possession would allow the city to take control of the area ahead of the official purchase process. Additionally, the city environment and culture sectors are encouraged to work on swiftly resuming operations at the arena.
According to the city’s statement, the acquisition process involves multiple stages, making it difficult to predict its duration and final outcomes, particularly due to potential legal appeals. While interim possession may be granted, it is estimated that it will take at least a year to fully bring the arena under city control and commence operations. In total, the acquisition process could span several years.
Despite this, the city remains open to other potential sales. If an alternative method for utilizing the Helsinki Arena is secured, the city will abandon its request for acquisition. Furthermore, on October 30, Helsinki submitted a legal challenge regarding unpaid land rents related to the arena to the Helsinki District Court.
