Blindeforbundet, KrF, and Høyre have criticized the University of Southeast Norway (USN) for failing to accommodate students with disabilities. Blind student Frode Stenrud risks losing his study position at USN because the university believes it cannot provide the necessary adjustments for him.

Statistics from Statistics Norway in 2020 indicate that only 41% of people with disabilities are employed compared to 75% of the general population, while over 100,000 disabled individuals express a desire to work. In response to the criticism, USN stated that they have not denied Stenrud a place but have struggled to find him a suitable internship. They emphasize communication with him to seek solutions.

Terje André Olsen, leader of Blindeforbundet, described the failure to provide adequate accommodations as discrimination. He noted that many face similar challenges with insufficient support in educational settings. He acknowledges that while institutions may feel overwhelmed, they cannot evade responsibility.

Ida Lindtveit Røse, deputy leader of KrF, expressed outrage at USN’s apparent lack of respect for individuals wanting to contribute to society. She urges the university to change course, asserting that disabilities should not hinder success.

The issue of disability support in education is not isolated. Other students with disabilities have shared their frustrations, highlighting a wider trend of challenges in accessing education and employment. Terje André Olsen pointed out that many individuals are forced into disability benefits, despite a genuine desire to work, warning that political inaction perpetuates the problem.

In conclusion, USN has acknowledged the complexities involved in providing accommodations but remains committed to improving their support systems to enhance educational access for all.
