According to Antti Koivula, the head of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, a significant challenge in the workforce is integrating younger generations into work communities. He noted on Yle’s news program that today’s young workers, who have trained during the COVID-19 pandemic, confront the job market from a drastically different perspective than older generations did.

The debate surrounding remote work and its potential retraction has intensified in recent months. A survey by Yle revealed that many companies have implemented restrictions on remote work. Koivula remarked that the negative aspects of remote work have been more prominently highlighted recently. He estimates that around half of remote workers are doing well, while the other half struggle. In contrast, businesses and work communities appear to be at a disadvantage in remote settings.

“Community and innovation capabilities are not functioning as effectively as desired,” Koivula stated. He emphasized that the pandemic marked a pivotal moment in the evolution of work life. In general, perceptions of work and life have dramatically shifted. Discussions at workplaces now address issues that were unimaginable five years ago, indicating a significant transformation in the work environment.

Koivula also pointed out that companies vary widely, and the situation for individuals has become polarized. Businesses need to assess their circumstances, determine the best operational model, and commit to its long-term development. “Everyone should find their own golden path to navigate,” he advised.
