Construction begins on bath lagoon and hotel in Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland
The construction of a bath lagoon and hotel in Vestmannaeyjar is set to transform the local community, according to the town’s mayor. Iris Róbertsdóttir believes that residents will have the opportunity to enjoy the lagoon in about two to three years.
This project represents the largest tourism initiative ever undertaken in the area. The mayor anticipates that groundbreaking will occur at the beginning of the next year. Lavaspring Vestmannaeyjar ehf. plans to establish a 1,500-square-meter lagoon and a 90-room hotel overlooking Skansinn, near the island’s entrance.
The hotel will offer stunning views of Klettsvík and Eyjafjallajökull, positioning the project as an exciting addition that will significantly boost both Vestmannaeyjar and its tourism sector. Róbertsdóttir highlighted that this development is essential, especially since much of the current offerings are summer-related.
The introduction of the lagoon and hotel will help provide year-round activities for locals and enhance economic opportunities, as the mayor noted that the impact on both employment and the economy will be significant.
The project is currently in the planning stages, with a proposal for a new development plan already submitted at a recent meeting of the town’s environmental and planning council. If all goes as hoped, Róbertsdóttir is optimistic that visitors will be able to enjoy the lagoon by 2026 or 2027, anticipating a construction phase of around one and a half to two years after groundbreaking.
