A significant fire caused extensive damage to a townhouse in Fossvogur last night, fortunately resulting in no injuries to residents. However, the family pet did not survive the blaze.

Two residents were at home during the incident and managed to escape safely. Fire Chief Birgir Sveinsson reported that the fire department faced high demand recently, with this being the second house fire in the capital region over the weekend.

Emergency crews were dispatched around 3 a.m. after reports of a fire on the upper floor of the two-story townhouse. Firefighters encountered heavy flames and thick black smoke upon arrival. Although it was a difficult situation, no serious injuries were reported.

Birgir explained that all available units were sent to respond, highlighting the stress of managing fires in residential areas where individuals could potentially be trapped. The response was further complicated by a simultaneous increase in calls for medical emergencies, stretching resources even thinner.

The fire’s origin is under investigation by local authorities. Earlier in the weekend, another fire occurred at Fensölum in Kópavogur, where a family of four was treated at a local hospital but did not sustain injuries. Birgir noted the coincidental timing of these incidents as unusual but emphasized the resilience and dedication of the fire service during such taxing times.
