Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson, leader of the Medium Party, has stated that it is undesirable for the future of Ukraine for Icelanders to assist in “draining the country”. He made these remarks during a televised debate on immigration policies. Sigmundur expressed his view that helping Russia could be detrimental to Ukraine’s prospects.

He pointed to Iceland having the highest number of asylum applications in the Nordic countries per capita, highlighting that just over 1,400 asylum seekers arrived in Iceland in the first eight months of the year, down from 3,000 the previous year. During the debate, it was noted that Ukrainians made up the largest group among asylum seekers, with special rules applicable to them until February of next year.

When asked whether he believed Iceland should stop accepting people from Ukraine, Sigmundur clarified that this was not the position of his party. “But I am pointing out that this all comes at a cost, and we need to prioritize,” he explained.

In response, Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, leader of the Reform Party, accused Sigmundur of spreading rumors and speaking indirectly under the guise of concern, claiming his remarks stirred up a mix of ignorance, animosity, and distrust toward asylum seekers. This exchange reflects the ongoing debates in Iceland regarding immigration policy and the humanitarian responsibilities of the country amid the current geopolitical climate.
